Pema Lingpa Lineage
The Vajra Garland of Longevity

Amitāyus, Light of Boundless Life; Caṇḍālī;
Lotus Skull-Garland; the Great Fortress, Mother Tsogyal;
Princess Pema Sal, Lamp of the Lotus; the Great Treasure, Lotus Realm—
Please grant the siddhi of mastery over life and longevity.
The Auspicious Origin of This Practice
Princess Pema Sal was the only beloved daughter of Dharma King Trisong Detsen. From the time she was young, the king cherished her as the jewel held in the palm of his hand. However, when Princess Pema Sal was twelve years old, she tragically passed away. Overwhelmed with grief, the king carried her body day and night without rest to Samye Chimphu, weeping and pleading with Guru Rinpoche to save her.
Unable to bear the king’s sorrow, Guru Rinpoche summoned back the princess’s consciousness and restored her to life. Yet Guru Rinpoche knew that although the princess had revived, her lifespan would not be long. Therefore, he entrusted Princess Pema Sal to the care of the wisdom ḍākinī Yeshe Tsogyal.
In order for the princess to swiftly attain accomplishment, the teachings Guru Rinpoche bestowed upon her were the essence of all essences, the most secret among the most secret. Guru Rinpoche, Dharma King Trisong Detsen, and the wisdom ḍākinī Yeshe Tsogyal together planted profound aspirations for the princess and sealed them with secret seals. They prophesied that in future lives, she would swiftly attain accomplishment, widely spread the Buddhadharma, carry out vast activities for the benefit of beings, become a king of treasure revealers, and reveal profound treasure teachings for the welfare of sentient beings.
Thus, through her final five pure rebirths, the princess successively manifested as Pema Ledrel Tsal, the first treasure revealer of the Khandro Nyingtik; the omniscient Dharma king Longchenpa; and finally, the great treasure revealer Pema Lingpa.
This Dharma is the most ultimate longevity pith instruction among the many essences that Guru Rinpoche bestowed upon the princess at that time. In our present age, the Ninth Gangteng Tulku, the body emanation of the great tertön Pema Lingpa, also relied upon this practice to restore the life of Bhutan’s Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden. Its qualities and power are truly inconceivable.
Qualities and Benefits of the Practice
First, through the outer practice of nirmāṇakāya Amitāyus, all the vital essences of the great elements are summoned, together with the essences of gold, silver, precious jewels, and the five grains, thereby accomplishing the vajra body.
Through the inner practice of the sambhogakāya Five-Family Amitāyus, the blessings and power of all the Buddhas are gathered, together with the wealth and resources of worldly mastery. Inner obstacles of illness and obstructing forces are pacified, and the five poisons are purified into the five wisdoms, thereby accomplishing the luminous sambhogakāya.
Through the secret practice of the self-arising primordial wisdom Five-Family Amitāyus in union with the Five Buddha Consorts, the realization of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is gathered—such as the great compassion of Avalokiteśvara, the great power of Vajrapāṇi, and the great wisdom of Mañjuśrī. In this way, one accomplishes the realization of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the dharmakāya, sambhogakāya, and nirmāṇakāya.
Through the most secret practice, one meditates upon the three channels and five chakras as the self-appearing Amitāyus, united with the Five Buddha Consorts. Resting in the state of the dharmadhātu, free from any object of fixation, one realizes that the essence is groundless and rootless; realization itself is the view of reality; and self-appearance is unobstructed manifestation. Thus, the five aggregates are recognized as the Five Buddha Families, the five great elements as the Five Buddha Consorts, and the five poisons as the five wisdoms. Through this, one accomplishes the vidyādhara state of mastery over deathless life and longevity.
Through the unsurpassed practice, Amitāyus self-appears within a mass of five-colored light. From this, the radiance of the three kāyas shines forth and increases without limit, transforming into five-colored bindus and vajra chains. Conceptual fixation and discursive thought are exhausted, the dharmadhātu and awareness unite, and the dynamic power of awareness is accomplished.
Because this practice contains the Great Perfection practices of Trekchö and Tögal, it is called The Vajra Garland. Through this Dharma practice, practitioners can undoubtedly accomplish mastery over deathless longevity. Therefore, it is the ultimate longevity accomplishment practice.
