Pema Lingpa Lineage

The Three Roots of the Guru’s Heart Accomplishment: Lama Norbu Gyatso -Ocean of Jewels is the heart-essence instruction that Guru Rinpoche bestowed in ancient times upon Princess Pema Sal, so that she might swiftly attain accomplishment.

Its principal deities are:

Peaceful Guru: Guru Padmasambhava, Ocean of Jewels
Wrathful Guru: Guru Padmasambhava, Great Red Garland of Blazing Fire
Yidam: Most Secret Hayagrīva
Ḍākinī: Most Secret Vajravārāhī

Among the thirty-two volumes of great treasure teachings revealed by the great tertön Pema Lingpa, the most principal are the Three Great Treasures: The Guru’s Heart Accomplishment: Ocean of Jewels, The Red Avalokiteśvara: Lamp That Dispels the Darkness of Suffering, and The Great Perfection Accomplishment Practice.

Among these, The Guru’s Heart Accomplishment: Ocean of Jewels is the uncommon Three Roots accomplishment practice of the Peling lineage: Guru Padmasambhava, Ocean of Jewels, as the Guru; Most Secret Hayagrīva as the Yidam; and Most Secret Vajravārāhī as the Ḍākinī.

The reason this practice is called a “Heart Accomplishment” is that its view is based on the perspective of the Mind Section of the Great Perfection, Atiyoga. Its actual practice is principally based on Anuyoga, while its conduct and activities are chiefly based on Mahāyoga. Therefore, within this liturgy are contained the generation stage, the completion stage, as well as the Great Perfection practices of primordial purity, Trekchö, and spontaneous presence, Tögal. In this way, the Mahāyoga of generation, the Anuyoga of scriptures and instructions, and the Atiyoga of pith instructions are all included within it. Because the scope of its contents is so vast and sublime, it is called Ocean of Jewels.

Lineage

As stated in the lineage prayer:

Samantabhadra, Amitābha, and Lotus Dance Lord,
Vajra Skull-Garland, Ḍākinī Tsogyal,
Princess Pema Sal, jewel held in the palm—
Grant empowerments, blessings, and all siddhis.

According to the lineage prayer,this profound treasure teaching was transmitted by Samantabhadra to Amitābha, who is inseparable from himself, and to Hayagrīva, the Lotus Dance Lord. It was then bestowed by Guru Rinpoche, manifesting as Vajra Skull-Garlanded Power, upon the wisdom consort Yeshe Tsogyal. Thereafter, it was transmitted to Princess Pema Sal, the cherished jewel of Dharma King Trisong Detsen, and was concealed as a treasure teaching.

It was prophesied that in the future, the reincarnation of Princess Pema Sal—whose former birth was the omniscient Longchenpa, and who, because of his supreme qualities, is enthroned at the center of the Five Great Tertön Kings—would reveal this treasure. This was the great tertön Pema Lingpa.

From Pema Lingpa, this most profound and pure lineage of the Three Roots accomplishment practice has been transmitted down to our root teacher, the Ninth Gangteng Tulku, the authentic body emanation of Pema Lingpa himself.

This practice gathers together the pith instructions of the four branches of approach and accomplishment, as well as the two stages of generation and completion. Thus, through it, one may swiftly attain both the common and supreme siddhis.

In the past, all the masters of the Ancient Translation Nyingma tradition praised this Dharma with one voice as the unique treasure among all the hidden treasures of Tibet. Its qualities and benefits may be briefly described as follows:

Qualities and Benefits of the Practice

Within this Three Roots accomplishment practice, it is clearly taught that one outwardly relies upon the nirmāṇakāya Guru; inwardly accomplishes the peaceful sambhogakāya Yidam; secretly engages in the activities of the wrathful Ḍākinī; and, in suchness, perfects the essence of the dharmakāya completion stage.

Because all of these are accomplished within a single maṇḍala, this practice is also known as The Secret Assembly Guru Accomplishment Practice. It is the root of all Guru accomplishment practices.
